Alternative Transmission Inc. Proposes Groundbreaking Alternative to Traditional Electrical Transmission
Charleston, SC – June 30, 2019 – Alternative Transmission Inc. (ATI) has taken a bold step in the energy sector by petitioning the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to allow its innovative surface transmission solution to compete with traditional electric transmission companies. Filed on May 3, 2019, the petition seeks recognition of ATI’s cutting-edge technology under the Federal Power Act, a law governing the interstate transmission of electricity since the 1930s.
ATI proposes a revolutionary way to deliver electric energy to underserved and unserved power markets—without the need for unsightly overhead wires or the costly and environmentally damaging wire corridors. By utilizing state-of-the-art flow battery technology, chemical energy, and existing surface transportation such as railroads, ATI can swiftly and cost-effectively provide electric energy while preserving the environment. Unlike traditional methods, ATI’s approach eliminates the need to condemn private property or clear-cut thousands of acres for power lines.
Bi-Directional Charging: A Game-Changer for Energy Markets
A key aspect of ATI’s patent is bi-directional charging, which allows mobile battery systems to both store electricity and “sell back” energy to the grid. This groundbreaking technology enables ATI to dynamically balance supply and demand by charging during periods of low consumption and discharging when demand is high—providing crucial flexibility and grid stability. By making efficient use of surface transportation and renewable energy storage, ATI offers a clean and sustainable solution to meet modern energy needs.
Request for Federal Recognition
ATI’s petition to FERC requests official recognition of its service as interstate transmission under the Federal Power Act, paving the way for competition with established utilities. With this regulatory acknowledgment, ATI would be able to compete for transmission projects that are essential for ensuring the reliability and economic viability of power delivery systems across the nation.
“ATI’s innovative technology allows us to deliver electricity where traditional wires cannot reach, providing a cleaner and faster solution for underserved communities,” said Adam Rousselle, President at ATI. “Our approach not only reduces costs but also eliminates the environmental footprint caused by traditional transmission infrastructure. We believe this is the future of power transmission.”
A decision on ATI’s petition is anticipated by the end of the year. If granted, it will enable ATI to bring its cutting-edge energy solutions to markets in need of reliable and affordable power.
