Why we do it

At the Caribbean Basin Power Authority, we are committed to bringing America together by ensuring that every American, including those in Puerto Rico, has access to the same quality power as the mainland. Where better to resolve unnecessarily high costs of electricity, relieve endemic poverty, and ensure reliable power even after a Category 5 hurricane than Puerto Rico? Project Equity is our answer to these challenges, aiming to unite America by delivering reliable and cost-effective electricity to the island, ensuring resilience against natural disasters and fostering economic growth.

How we do it

Project Equity is designed to transform Puerto Rico’s energy landscape by addressing the island’s vulnerabilities, especially in the face of hurricanes. By moving baseload generation off-island and installing a robust undersea and underground transmission system, we provide consistent and affordable power. This initiative significantly lowers electricity costs, improves the reliability of the power supply, fosters economic growth by attracting new investments and creating jobs, and reduces tens of billions of dollars in future costs to the U.S. Treasury for hurricane restoration. Additionally, it strengthens important ties between the United States and Puerto Rico, enhancing national security and energy independence while allowing American energy generators to profit from their surplus electricity.
